Research Project: Advanced Manufacturing


Advisor: Dr. Y. Lawrence Yao, Professor of Engineering, Columbia University


Overview: Manufacturing is an important part of any economy. It meets societal needs, adds value to raw materials, and provides well-paying jobs. Advanced manufacturing takes advantage of information technology, new materials and processing technology and meet the increasing demands of society. In this project, students will learn basics of manufacturing and be introduced to advanced manufacturing. They will carry out guided independent research to explore the challenges and opportunities of advanced manufacturing and make a final presentation. Upon successful completion of the project, a certificate of accomplishment will be issued, which could be in the form of a recommendation letter.


Project outline: The project duration is one month. Every Saturday and Sunday, there is a 2-hour lecture/discussion via Skype or similar. PowerPoint slides for the lectures will be provided prior to the lecture. A question set will be assigned each of the first two weeks and solutions will be provided the following week. Students will carry out a case study, prepare a PowerPoint file, and orally present it in the last week. Lectures, discussions, questions and presentation will all be in English. Application requirements:

· Students should be in the 11th or 12th grade in their high school and at least be in the top 25 percentile of their class.

· Their English proficiency should allow them to communicate effectively in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.

· They should have a strong interest in science and engineering and aspire to get admitted to top universities in the US.

· They should be good at time management and be able to participate in this project, while still fulfilling their other responsibilities.

· After submitting an application, students may be asked to interview with Prof. Yao via Skype or similar before a final decision is made.


Bio: Dr. Y. Lawrence Yao is Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University and Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory. He joined Columbia University in 1994 and served as Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering from 2005 to 2011. He received Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from the University of WisconsinMadison, and B.E. degree from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. He served as President of North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI) of Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) during 2009-2010. He chaired the Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED) of American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) from 2010-2011. He currently serves as Editor, Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering of ASME. He has published over 250 technical papers and was honored with 5 Best Paper awards. He holds 8 US patents, edited 8 volumes, and co-authored 3 book chapters. He supervised many students including graduate, undergraduate, and summer high school students. He received prestigious awards including the Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award and the Milton Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal from ASME, Fulbright Senior Scholar Award, Outstanding Paper Awards from NAMRI, and Dedicated Service Awards from ASME and SME. He is a Fellow of ASME, SME, and Laser Institute of America.
